AUSA 2016: Northrop Grumman Touts UH-60V BLACK HAWK Cockpit Digitisation Upgrade Solution
Northrop Grumman is the digital cockpit supplier and integrator for the US Army’s UH-60V programme, which replaces analogue gauges in UH-60L helicopters with electronic instrument displays. The upgraded helicopter will replicate the UH-60M pilot-vehicle interface and provide interoperability. Northrop Grumman’s solution extends the life and mission capabilities of the UH-60 platform.

Additional benefits of Northrop Grumman’s scalable, fully integrated mission equipment package include enhanced pilot situational awareness and mission safety, decreased workload and life cycle cost, and a common training environment.

The company’s approach for the design and implementation of the UH-60V integrated mission equipment package is based on its experience with similar upgrades for the US Marine Corps AH-1Z and UH-1Y helicopters and US Navy E-2D Advanced HAWKEYE programmes.

Lockheed Martin's ARES 'transformer' is scheduled to begin test flights in June 2016
The USMC has taken the lead on requirements planning, but hopes to organise a JCTD with other operators who also need flexible, terrain-independent transport for small ground units
Lockheed Martin's Aerial Reconfigurable Embedded System (ARES) is preparing to enter the third phase of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA's) Transformer (TX) vehicle development programme next year. Three months of test flights are scheduled to begin in June 2016, Lockheed Martin officials said during a 13 October interview at the Association of the US Army's (AUSA's) annual conference in Washington, DC.

"In January we will go into ground test at Yuma [Proving Ground] in New Mexico," Bob Wetherall, Lockheed Martin's ARES programme manager, told IHS Jane's . The prototype will then be flown over the course of three months, Wetherall said.

After the concept is proven, the Pentagon is expected to develop requirements that could lead to a programme of record to acquire the system. The US Marine Corps (USMC) has taken the lead on requirements planning, but hopes to organise a Joint Capability Technology Demonstration (JCTD) with other US military operators who also need flexible, terrain-independent transportation for logistics, personnel transport, and tactical support missions for small ground units.

Lockheed Martin is working with Piasecki Aircraft Corp on a design that includes twin tilting wing-mounted ducted fans providing vertical lift and then transitioning to deliver forward thrust. The ARES flight module is designed to transport a variety of payloads. The flight module would travel between its base and field operations to deliver and retrieve several different types of detachable mission modules, including cargo resupply, casualty evacuation (CASEVAC), and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR).

DARPA in 2010 selected AAI Corporation and Lockheed Martin as prime system integrators for the TX vehicle programme, which it characterised at the time as a 'flying jeep' that would combine 4x4 road performance with a capability to reconfigure into a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) air vehicle.

General Dynamics Land systems firması yeni hafif tank konsepti Griffin'i tanıttı.

General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) on 3 October unveiled a medium-weight tracked vehicle demonstrator called the Griffin that meshes elements of the turret and 120 mm cannon from the company's M1A1/M1A2 Abrams main battle tank with its Ajax Scout Specialist Vehicle.

GDLS' Griffin technology demonstrator vehicle was unveiled on 3 October. (IHS/Dan Wasserbly)

In fiscal year 2017 (FY 2017) the army requested USD9.678 million to begin a new-start programme called Mobile Protected Firepower (MPF): a vehicle meant to quickly deploy with relatively low logistics demand, but enough protection and firepower to help ensure an infantry brigade combat team's freedom of action.

The Griffin is meant as a "conversation starter with the army", which could then come back to GDLS with suggestions for changes, Mike Peck, GDLS' head of business development, told IHS Jane's at the annual Association of the US Army (AUSA) symposium.

The Abrams uses a unique variant of Rheinmetall's L44 smoothbore gun, designated the M256 and manufactured at Watervliet Arsenal, but the Griffin demonstrator is fitted with the 120 mm XM360 gun that was developed for the erstwhile Future Combat Systems programme, Dave Crocker, GDLS' vice-president for engineering and development, told IHS Jane's . It can also integrate a 105 mm M58 gun.

Griffin's turret is based on the Abrams SEPV2 turret, but is lighter weight and uses aluminium construction. It is mated to the Ajax steel chassis and the demonstrator uses the Ajax powerpack and overall components, which are manufactured in Spain, but GDLS would seek US production if it was chosen to build something based on Griffin for the US Army.

Peck said the company could respond to army feedback with a revised platform within about 9-12 months.

GDLS representatives said the Griffin configuration at AUSA weighs about 28 tonnes - two could fit on a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III - but explosive reactive armour or active protection systems could be added for a few extra tonnes.

BAE Systems Unveils Next Generation Bradley Prototype at AUSA 2016

BAE Systems’ Next Generation Bradley Fighting Vehicle demonstrator was unveiled today at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) annual meeting in Washington, D.C. The concept vehicle features an upgraded chassis that allows for significantly increased underbelly protection, improved force protection for mounted troops, compartmentation of fuel and ordnance, and more space and electrical power for future technology growth.

“In the current budget environment, the Army often has to choose between maintaining an existing fleet and developing new capabilities,” said Deepak Bazaz, director of Artillery and Bradley Programs at BAE Systems. “We’re investing in research and development to demonstrate cost-effective options for the Army to address current gaps. We’re focused on integrating current, emerging, and future technologies to significantly improve the Bradley’s mobility, force protection, and lethality.

“By leveraging new and emerging technology, with an eye towards commonality within the formation, we can continue to provide superior capabilities for our troops,” Bazaz added. “Key to our approach is providing built-in growth capacity that will ensure the system can support future inbound technologies, allowing our soldiers to successfully execute their mission in the coming decades.”

The Next Generation Bradley includes suspension upgrades to enhance mobility to maneuver within the Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT). It incorporates an upgraded turret from the current Bradley and enhancements achieved during ongoing Engineering Change Proposal modernization efforts, such as suspension improvements, targeting sensors, and network connectivity. BAE Systems will use this vehicle to mature these technologies and provide a platform for development and user experimentation and evaluation.

The prototype features armor, fuel tanks, and the driver’s hatch from the Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle, and the 600 volt electronics and final drives from the M109A7 Self-Propelled Howitzer integrated with current and future Bradley systems. Leveraging technology from other BAE Systems-built vehicles in the ABCT allows for significant savings in both development time and cost. In addition, the commonality of parts among the vehicles also provides significant cost savings opportunities over the life cycle of the vehicle and reduces the complex logistics trail.

BAE Systems is the original equipment manufacturer of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle and continues to provide full life-cycle support to the Army and allied partners.

Raytheon completes first AMRAAM-ER missile flight tests from NASAMS air defense system

Live fire shot of Raytheon's AMRAAM-ER from NASAMS launcher

Raytheon Company has successfully flight-tested the newest variant of the combat-proven AMRAAM® missile from the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System, or NASAMS™, surface-based system. Featuring an enlarged rocket motor and other enhancements, AMRAAM-ER will greatly expand the NASAMS engagement envelope with a 50 percent increase in maximum range and 70 percent increase in maximum altitude.

The live-fire shot verified that the complete system – including the AMRAAM-ER missile, NASAMS missile launcher, Sentinel Radar and the Fire Distribution Center, or FDC – worked seamlessly together to engage and destroy a target drone with a live-warhead-equipped missile.

"AMRAAM-ER combines the guidance section and warhead from AMRAAM with the rocket motor from the Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile to affordably boost the NASAMS capability," said Dr. Taylor W. Lawrence, president of Raytheon Missiles Systems. "We believe it's an ideal solution for ground-based air defense customers worldwide."

Norwegian military NASAMS operators conducted the test. They controlled and employed the AMRAAM-ER missile from an upgraded FDC, proving the effectiveness of the missile when matched with the NASAMS launcher.

Designed specifically for ground-based air defense, NASAMS is owned by seven countries and has been used by the U.S. National Capital Region's air defense system since 2005. Manufactured by Raytheon and Kongsberg, NASAMS is the most widely used short-and medium-range air defense system in NATO. In addition to the U.S., it is in service in Norway, Finland, Spain, The Netherlands and one undisclosed country. It is also currently in production for Oman.

"NASAMS with AMRAAM-ER gives lower-tier defenses additional capability against threats such as cruise missiles, aircraft and drones," said Wes Kremer, president of Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems.

Raytheon completed extensive lab testing on the AMRAAM-ER in 2015, enabling the company to move forward with launcher and system integration.
