ILA 2014: The Republic of Turkey is partner country for the ILA Berlin Air Show 2014

Berlin, 19 March 2014 - The Republic of Turkey is the official partner country for the International Aerospace Exhibition ILA 2014. The country at the crossroads between Europe and Asia is an attractive emerging market for companies in the aerospace industry. The NATO partner Turkey will make its strongest appearance to date at this year's ILA Berlin Air Show. The Turkish aerospace industry will present itself as a modern, fast-growing and dynamic industry that offers business partners, customers and investors from around the world excellent opportunities for cooperation.

Turkey has consistently taken part in the biennial ILA Berlin Air Show since 2008. The numbers of Turkish exhibitors increased continuously. Industry experts from this year's partner country always made up a significant proportion of the foreign trade fair guests during this period. Since the introduction of the partner country concept, the previous partner countries at the ILA have been Russia in 2006, India in 2008, Switzerland in 2010 and Poland in 2012.

The ILA Berlin Air Show is organized by the German Aerospace Industries Association (BDLI) and by Messe Berlin GmbH.

Mr. Murad BAYAR, Undersecretary for Defence Industries shows the importance of Turkey: "For the Republic of Turkey, it is an honor and at the same time a pleasure to be the partner country at the ILA Berlin Air Show 2014. This oldest aerospace exhibition in the world with its longstanding tradition not only offers the Turkish industry the opportunity to present their impressive range of services and products, but also provides an excellent opportunity to make business contacts at the same time. Germany has been the most important trading partner of Turkey for many years. I am pleased that many Turkish exhibitors will make an impressive appearance at the ILA, which is one of the most important aerospace exhibitions in the world and so important for our country."

BDLI President Bernhard Gerwert says: "We are very happy about Turkey’s commitment to become the partner country for the ILA in 2014. Turkey is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and is one of the major growth markets for air transport. Turkish and German as well as European companies have already successfully cooperated on projects in the civil and military aviation industry for some time." Gerwert further explains: "Turkey is an important strategic partner for our industry, particularly with regard to long-term cooperation."

The liberalization of the Turkish aviation sector in 2002 marked the beginning of a strong growth period for the Turkish civil aviation market. With an annual growth rate of up to 30%, it significantly exceeded the average worldwide growth rate in air traffic of approximately 5%. The planned construction of the world's biggest airport in Istanbul is proof of this dynamic development.

Turkish Aerospace Industries(TAI), ROKETSAN, HAVELSAN, TUBITAK – Space Technologies Research Institute, TURKISH AIRLINES (THY), FIGES Engineering and Defence and Aviation Cluster (OSSA), Aerospace Clustering Association will present the impressive industrial capabilities and outstanding research and development work in this industry on an exhibition area of 736 square meters. TAI’s products and solutions will be presented during ILA Berlin Airshow with a specific emphasize on “ANKA” Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) UAV System and “HÜRKUŞ” Trainer Aircraft. Exhibitors, delegations and visitors will have a chance to examine the Hürkuş full scale cockpit during the ILA Berlin Airshow. High-level delegations from politics, business and the military are expected to attend the ILA.

A number of companies in the German aerospace industry are already working successfully with Turkish partners. Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) is the responsible strategic partner for the production of various parts for civilian and military Airbus programs. TAI has built its worldwide success on the foundation of the technological excellence of its products and solutions, participating in international aerospace programs such as JSF/F-35, A400M, A350 XWB and B787. ILA2014: TAI looking to make step change to 'next level', says CEO

Having transformed itself over the previous decade from a subcontractor to an original equipment manufacturer, Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) is now looking to take the next step as it seeks to fully establish itself as one of the world's foremost defence companies.

Speaking to IHS Jane's at the ILA Berlin Airshow on 21 May, company president and CEO, Muharrem Dortkasli, said: "I feel that the most challenging period [for TAI] was the past 10 years, and that is now behind us. It is now time for us to make another step change to the next level, and to start exhibiting and selling our own products [to the international market]."
With Turkey featuring prominently at ILA as the official partner country, TAI had a particularly strong presence at the show, with a number of its products on display. These included the T129 ATAK combat helicopter, the Anka medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and a mock-up of the Hurkus trainer aircraft.
With the first 9 of 50 ATAK helicopters having only recently been delivered to the Turkish Armed Forces, the T129 is now primed to take on the export market. Dortkasli declined to name specific countries being targeted, but the helicopter did make an appearance at the Bahrain Airshow earlier in the year in what could be a precursor to a Bell AH-1 Cobra replacement programme for the Middle Eastern kingdom.
According to IHS Jane's Defence Procurement , other attack helicopter requirements exist in Argentina, Chile, Finland, Hungary, Indonesia, Kuwait, Malaysia, Morocco, the Philippines, and Poland, among others. Dortkasli noted that he expected the T129 to make its UK debut at the Farnborough Airshow in July.
On the subject of the Anka MALE UAV, Dortkasli was again reluctant to comment on specific opportunities, but with the Turkish Armed Force having recently placed an order for 10 Block B configuration platforms (with deliveries set to commence in 2016), there is plenty of scope for future export success. While the Anka is currently unarmed, TAI is known to be looking at options for weaponising the platform.
With regard to the Hurkus, Dortkasli said the ongoing flight trials campaign precluded it from making an appearance at ILA and that Farnborough may also be too soon. Instead, a life-size mock-up of the cockpit was shown on the company's stand. Even so, with the Turkish Air Force expected to field the Hurkus in conjunction with its Northrop T-38 Talon, the twin-seat turboprop should prove to be a low-cost but capable option in both the light trainer and light attack categories globally.

ILA: Roketsan, Airbus sign defence pact
Source:  17:13 20 May 2014
Turkish company Roketsan has linked up with Airbus Defence & Space to investigate collaboration on several military aerospace projects, including the projected TFX fighter programme.

Under the terms of a memorandum of understanding signed at the show, the organisations will initially exchange technical and business information to define possible areas of co-operation.

Roketsan president and chief executive Selcuk Yasar says he looks forward to exploring a range of opportunities, including integrating weapons systems such as Turkey’s Stand-Off Missile on existing Airbus military aircraft, as well as on future combat systems.

Airbus Defence & Space’s head of military aircraft Domingo Ureña says his company hopes to expand its “excellent relationship with Turkish industry”.

The big prize for Airbus would be a role in Turkey’s fifth-generation TFX project. If the aircraft goes ahead, it will replace the nation’s Lockheed Martin F-16 force, which currently numbers around 150 aircraft. Turkey wants to partner one or more foreign companies on the programme.

Ankara has already decided to replace its elderly McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantoms with Lockheed's F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, and has recently confirmed plans to order the first two of what is due eventually to be a 100-strong fleet.
