Austal adds Mine Warfare and Maritime Security to its Cape Class Patrol Boat family 640 001Austal's Cape Class Patrol Boat scale model showcased at Euronaval 2016

Speaking about the new variants at Euronaval 2016, Austal Chief Executive Officer said the Cape Class has quickly become a benchmark for effective maritime border patrol capability, and the new variants build upon this success to offer even greater mission flexibility and fleet utilisation options.

“With the ‘NEW CAPEability’ range, operators may now perform multiple, complex missions that have been traditionally carried out by Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV’s), for a much lower acquisition, lifecycle operation and sustainment cost and with the assurance of a proven, effective design.” Singleton remarked.

The new Maritime Security variant adds new weapons including a 30mm stabilised main gun, 2 x 12.7mm remote controlled guns, provision for short range anti-surface missile system, plus aviation support - in the form of a dedicated Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) launch pad, workshop and operations room.

The new Mine Warfare variant offers further multiple-mission capability with anti-mine warfare (MUW) packages (including an unmanned surface vessel, USV for mine sweeping). There is also a workshop and operations room that allows for additional mission profiles such as hydrographic survey.

These two variants add to the existing Border Protection variant that is already in operation with the Australian Border Force and Royal Australian Navy; providing essential maritime border protection, surveillance and interdiction support throughout Australia’s maritime jurisdiction.

The NEW CAPEability variants, currently under consideration by an overseas navy, are a low risk solution for operators seeking a vessel platform that offers high-performance across multiple mission profiles, reliably and economically. With a crew of just 18, the Cape is a cost effective alternative to larger, more expensive vessels and Austal’s proven success in customisation means that new designs may be tailored to meet specific regional or operating requirements quickly and easily.

L-CAT Katamaran Tipi Çıkarma gemisi

Alıntı
On the occasion of the 2016 Euronaval Exhibition, which is taking place from 17 to 21 October 2016 in Paris, CNIM is presenting the new version of its L-CAT Landing Catamaran. Following the L-CAT Ship-to-Shore version that is primarily operated on the basis of a LHD, this new variant is 100% “Shore-to-Shore”.

(http://www.navyrecognition.com/images/stories/west_europe/france/exhibition/euronaval_2016/news/CNIM_introduces_Shore_to_Shore_variant_of_its_famous_CAT_landing_craft_640_002.jpg)

The L-CAT Shore-to-Shore can operate on the basis of any coastal infrastructure: port, quay, slipway, beach. It has a bigger operational range of 800 NM in full load. Whereas the Ship-to-Shore benefited from the protection of its mother ship, the Shore-to-Shore is an autonomous system with its own means of communication, detection and self-defense, such as remotely operated weapon stations and armour protection on vital areas. Going beyond amphibious operations, it perfectly responds to current maritime security needs, as well as to civil assistance requirements, such as citizens evacuation in disaster-stricken areas.

Initially designed to depart from a well deck and to fulfil ship-to-shore or even shore-to-shore missions, this “two-in-one” ship is now available in a 100% Shore-to-Shore version in order to respond to intervention requirements with full autonomy and greater distances. As direct consequence of this, the cargo capacity of the L-CAT has been increased from the 80 metric tons of the Ship-to-Shore to 100 metric tons and a loading area of 127 m2.

Hydrodynamic optimizations have made it possible to improve its behaviour at sea when forced to ride waves, accelerate of manoeuvre. Initially mobile in the ship-to-shore, its wheelhouse is now fixed and ensures a 360° peripheral vision. It can accommodate up to eight crew members.

The Shore-to-Shore variant features a new superstructure design which aims to provide more living conditions and a better reception area for the crew members and the 54 embarked personnel. The move to a single propulsion line per hull, each composed of a 2,500 kW main engine and a Waterjet. This allows a max speed of 15 knots when fully loaded and 22 knots in light configuration. It has a fuel capacity of 22 m3. CNIM’s new Shore-to-Shore version has a length overall of 32.6 m, a breadth waterline of 13.2 m, a max draft of 2.35 m and a landing draft of 0.95 m.

Thales AUSS(Otonom Sualtı & Yüzey sistemi)

Alıntı
At Euronaval 2016, Thales and 19 French SMEs are introducing the new AUSS concept (Autonomous Underwater & Surface System), the world's first hybrid unmanned system capable of operating both above and below the surface. AUSS is designed for a broad range of civil and military roles, including intelligence gathering, maritime counter-terrorism, mine countermeasures and offshore platforms surveillance.
(http://www.navyrecognition.com/images/stories/west_europe/france/exhibition/euronaval_2016/news/Euronaval_2016_Thales_presents_new_Autonomous_Underwater_Surface_System_640_001.jpg)

Capitalising on 10 years’ experience with Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) deployed on mine countermeasures missions, Thales has developed a dozen high-tech innovations for the new AUSS system.
With these innovations, the system is capable of conducting an unprecedented range of civil and military missions that were previously impossible either very complex to perform with existing AUVs.

These missions include surveillance and naval intelligence gathering on the surface, undersea warfare (mine countermeasures) and maritime counter-terrorism. Civil missions include surveillance of underwater infrastructure such as offshore oil and gas installations.
 (http://www.navyrecognition.com/images/stories/west_europe/france/exhibition/euronaval_2016/news/Euronaval_2016_Thales_presents_new_Autonomous_Underwater_Surface_System_640_002.jpg)
Euronaval 2016 Thales presents new Autonomous Underwater Surface System 640 002Thales' new AUSS system

"With AUSS, Thales is bringing a completely new concept to the unmanned maritime systems market. We are sure that its unique set of operational capabilities will open up new horizons for civil as well as military organisations involved in maritime surveillance and protection. The launch of AUSS at Euronaval is a key milestone in a collective project that has been conducted over the last three years at the Thales site in Brest and in partnership with 19 SMEs. It marks the coming of age of the unmanned maritime systems industry in France," explains Pierre-Eric Pommellet, SVP Defence Mission Systems at Thales.

Designed for total manoeuvrability, AUSS can control its depth whilst moving in any direction and even when it is stationery. It is also exceptionally agile: if encountering threats or obstacles it can perform a 180° turn in less than 10 metres. With this 360° agility, the vehicle can also stabilise a sensor mast deployed several metres above the surface, which is not possible with any other underwater vehicle of comparable size. To meet the need for permanent surveillance, the Thales-designed AUSS offers superior endurance, making it possible to conduct missions lasting several weeks and spanning hundreds of kilometres. AUSS employs latest-generation sensors to ensure that the information captured during its missions is of the highest quality and relevance. With its 21" (53 cm) diameter hull, the system is designed to be launched and recovered from any type of naval vessel and from the shore. The system can be configured for different missions to optimise resource utilisation for customers.

AUSS is based on a systems approach that has been extensively proven by Thales over a number of years for ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) and undersea warfare operations. The new concept is the result of a joint effort, with a total of 19 SMEs based in Brittany, Anjou and Paris taking part in the project alongside Thales for the last three years. Sea trials have already been conducted on five occasions in 2016, confirming the system's ability to perform a broad range of missions and deploy the latest generation of sensors.

Euronaval 2016: MBDA target more exports
Opportunities to market missile technology and systems could present themselves at Euronaval according to MBDA officials, who also detailed a series of programme updates.

Speaking during a recent visit to their facility near Paris senior officials said that with a number of systems maturing, either in initial development or after some years or use, there was potential to secure further exports.

Last month the company signed off on a deal with the Qatar for the provision Marte ER, Exocet MM40 Block 3 missiles for a coastal defence system. Additionally earlier in the year another deal agreed the export of Aster 30 Block 1 and VL MICA missiles to the Gulf state.

Two examples of missiles primed for overseas markets are the aforementioned VL MICA and the new Simbad system.

Regarding the VL MICA, MBDA officials said that the system was simpler and easier to operate than another of the company’s range – the Aster 30.

‘We have only export contracts and will this year have a new customer. Sometimes customers seek to procure [the VL MICA] in multiple batches… the advantage is lower cost and works for the corvette market.’

MBDA will also display a functioning Simbad missile system at Euronaval, while officials revealed that deliveries had either begun or would do so soon to two customers. One customer is known to be Saudi Arabia, while the other remains undisclosed.

‘We are now delivering to our customers. [Simbad] can fit small ships, for use in the high seas for example and there is no maintenance either, you can store it on board for fifteen years. The VL MICA and Simbad are tailored towards the export market,’ said the official.

Meanwhile the joint UK-France Sea Venom programme is expected to undertake environment profile in October this year, with full development due for completion in 2018.

The first live test firing of the missile is slated for Q1 2017, one of around five required before it can be qualified for use.

The first customer has already been named as the UK Royal Navy for its Wildcat helicopter to replace the Sea Skua missile. However MBDA is also looking at the wider export market given the number of armed forces that use the Wildcat, or the legacy Lynx platform, and the Sea Skua.

GIVING YOUR TRAINING THE EDGE

STORY
03 October 2016

With the number of military submarines in use set to grow over the coming years, effective anti-submarine warfare measures are an essential part of national defence. Saab has drawn on decades of experience in area to provide a cost-effective training tool.

Submarines are one of the most effective weapons in the arsenals of modern defence forces. Capable of extreme quiet and stealth, they make it possible for navies to penetrate the defences of their opponents, from where they can undertake surveillance activities and launch attacks.
Given the considerable threat posed by such vessels, nations who want to ensure the integrity of their maritime borders need to have extremely effective anti-submarine warfare measures in place. “If you don't have adequate anti-submarine warfare capabilities, then you have a gap in your defences around your coastline”, explains Carl-Marcus Remén, Sales Director at Saab´s Business Unit Underwater Systems. “You are potentially allowing enemy submarines to work freely in your waters without any risk of detection.”
Passive measures such as mines and anti-submarine nets can play a role in anti-submarine warfare strategies, but the key emphasis is on Identifying, locating, and neutralizing enemy subs using assets such as surface warships, aircraft and other submarines. Identifying submarines
from their sonar signature is a key tool in the armoury and demands a high level of skill and training from crews.
Remén explains training techniques for anti-submarine warfare range from the study of tactics and on-land simulations right through to small scale at-sea simulations and large-scale exercises involving a range of vessels and real submarines. While large, full-scale simulations provide crews with excellent, first-hand experience, they are expensive and require submarines to be taken away from their important regular duties – a major logistical challenge.
Saab has considerable experience in anti-submarine warfare, thanks in part to the emphasis that Sweden places on the security of its own waters. The company is now addressing the need for realistic and economical anti-submarine warfare training through the AUV 62-AT, an autonomous underwater vehicle designed for use as an acoustic target. Able to be easily launched from ships, the device closely mimics a range of different submarine characteristics, providing crews with a cost-effective way of practising their anti-submarine warfare drills
“The AUV62-AT allows crews to do everything from undertaking basic training to firing a torpedo at a target and to then conduct extensive evaluation afterwards” explains Remén. This means it is of use to everyone from experienced crews to navies wanting to expand their anti-submarine warfare capabilities.”
With navies in Sweden, Netherlands, Poland and Norway now upgrading their submarine programs, Remén expects to see far more use of unmanned technology in anti-submarine warfare over the coming years. “I think there’s going to be a lot of focus on using unmanned underwater vehicles and also unmanned surface vehicles instead of using ships for submarine hunting”, he says.

Thales RAPIDSeaGuardian 40mm CIWS & Anti Surface Gun System

At Euronaval 2016, the largest naval defense exhibition in the world currently held in France, Thales unveiled the RAPIDSeaGuardian 40mm multi role artillery. It is basically a naval version of the famous landbased RAPIDFire system, using the same 40CTA canon (by Nexter & BAE Systems: CTA International).

Thales RAPIDSeaGuardian CIWS Euronaval 2016 news Thales RAPIDSeaGuardian Naval Gun System

Thanks to its powerful anti-aircraft gun and optronic fire-control, RAPIDSeaGuardian is optimised to defeat new air threats such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), helicopters, Fighters-Ground Attack (FGA), cruise missiles, Fast Patrol Boats, seaskimming missiles,...

Either in an autonomous or integrated mode, RAPIDSeaGuardian provides unrivaled anticipation capabilities. It can also be used for self-defence when docked or moored.

The main advantage of the system is to have similar footprint and weight as a 25mm system but with the increased fire power and range of a 40mm system. Thales is defining the RAPIDSeaGuardian as a new generation CIWS effective against super sonic seaskimming missile thanks to the airburst ammunition, as well as against assymetric threats thanks to the other ammunitions similar to the landbased RAPIDFire system.

The effective range of the gun is up to 4000 meters. It can be integrated of fully autonomous:
Own optronic sensor head is fitted directly on the turret:
• System can receive the target designation through the CMS
• Gun can operate autonomously
• Manning: only 1 operator required to operate the system (weapon engagement and firing order)
• One console needed (not specific)

Gun ammunition types:
The 40 mm gun has both air and surface defence capabilities with dedicated ammunition:
1/ Point Detonating (PD) + Air Burst (AB) fused High Energy ammunition combined in one General Purpose Round (GPR)
2/ Armour Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot (APFSDS) against armoured vehicle, penetrates 140mm of Rolled Homogeneous Armour at 1500m
3/ Training Practice (TP) for operator training purpose
4/ Anti-Aerial Air Burst (A3B) for air targets, more than 200 tungsten pellets of at least 3.3g
