Following an international competition, AmSafe Bridport of the UK has been awarded a contract for its latest Tarian net-type rocket propelled grenade (RPG) vehicle protection system. The total value of the UK contract is £10.6 million (US$17million).
Three RPG protection systems were downselected by the UK MoD and subjected to a series of rigorous testing and trials, which included live firings, as well as vehicle trials with the systems installed on a number of vehicle types. Trials were carried out by the UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory and the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and have included more than 800 live shots.
The Tarian RPG will be installed on a number of British Army armoured vehicles, including the latest General Dynamics Land Systems – Force Protection Europe Foxhound Light Protected Patrol Vehicle, several hundred of which will be delivered by the end of 2013 for deployment to Afghanistan.
Compared with bar/slat-type RPG protection systems, Tarian is lighter and is claimed to offer a higher level of protection by neutralising the highexplosive anti-tank warhead of the incoming RPG-7 type weapon. The core element of the defeat mechanism is an extremely strong textile net manufactured from high-tenacity fibres. These are attached to the vehicle using innovative flexible mounts that enable the system to withstand harsh operating conditions.
